Bold Beginnings
A master of playful, eye-popping luxury, Italian multi-media artist Matteo Cibic’s brand is synonymous with anthropomorphic designs, happy hues, and avant-garde style. The award-winning designer works indiscriminately with industrial processes and small artisans, for luxury brands, collectors and hi-tech companies. His works—from artistic terrariums to ceramics to rugs—have been displayed in museums and galleries around the world.
Cibic’s affinity for craftsmanship, artisans, and dauntless design come together in his new collection of hand-tufted rugs, Jaipur Wunderkammer, which he launched with Jaipur Rugs in 2019 and reiterated with Jaipur Living in the U.S. at the beginning of 2020. The eclectic collection is an ode to the vibrant art and architecture in the “Pink City” of Jaipur in Rajasthan, India.
Inspired by Architecture
“I always wanted to visit Jaipur for its architectural beauty and monuments,” says Cibic. “I was attracted to the innovative Jaipur Rugs business model and its mission, which to me is more a social enterprise than a typical global company that just cares about maximizing profits at the expense of craftsmen.”
Named for Wunderkammer—the cabinets of curiosities and exotic objects that appeared in Europe in the mid-16th century—the seven-piece collection breaks the boundaries of form, featuring rugs in a variety of shapes, pattern and color.

Creative Universe
“I’ve imbued my creative universe with the peculiar architecture and colors of the city and taken inspiration from ancient paintings and the architectonic sundial,” says Cibic. Indeed, the Stair Maze rug, (pictured above) showcases a labyrinthine pattern of pink ribbons and ochre stripes, while Royal Patio features architecturally inspired lattice patterns.
